…..Although the Japanese Justice Minister Chieko Nohno mumbled yes-yes some three weeks ago and promised to consider Bobby’s handwritten plea to the Japanese authorities from his detention cell to be allowed to go to Iceland, nothing has happened….
….When Fischer’s assistant approached the Japanese Justice Authority asking for an answer to the question of how long they intended to hold him there, a high ranking official is quoted to have replied, “We can keep him as long as we like. We can eat him if we choose to.”
Actually Bobby Fischer had been circumventing Japanese visa laws by getting an endless 3-month tourist visas to stay here for years. That visa scam did break Japanese law. If Bobby were a sad-sack English teacher would have been busted after the 2nd or 3rd renewal of his “tourist†visa whether or not he had a “proper” US passport. Fischer actually argues that he was making a political statement to play in Yugoslavia which was then under U.N. sanctions.
