Traditional Japanese fuddy-duddies will claim that sumo is cultural/spiritual and should always retain its purer aspects.
The use of a non-dirt sumo ring and the acceptance of bicycle-style Lycra shorts under the sumo mawashi belt are seen by older Japanese as an assault to their religion. Sheesh…it is not as though there is anything religious in the Japanese mindset except being Japanese.
Japan’s sumo world says “no thanks” to pants
TOKYO – A tussle has broken out in Japan’s tradition-bound sumo world over the right to wear pants in the ring….. wrestlers generally compete naked but for a “mawashi”, an arrangement of wrapped cloth that preserves a bare minimum of modesty.
Sumo’s amateur association hit upon the idea of allowing shy youngsters to wear “sumo pants”, a more substantial garment similar to cycling shorts…more…
