I don’t understand how the statisticians calculate this list. I lived in Tokyo for a few years after college. Yeah, it could be expensive, but as soon as you figured out how to navigate the city — and deal with Japanese real estate laws — you could live pretty well and inexpensively day by day. Now I’m in New York. Real Estate prices are insane, and food and drink will set you back big time. Everyone on Broadway seems rich; who needs the subway when you’ve got a private car!?! 100 yen stores? Forget it! The only thing that’s cheaper here is the art — music, art openings, readings, theater.
