Why WiBro? (Korea brings advanced WiFi to Japan)
WiBro — Analysing Korea’s home grown BWA standard
San Francisco and London —-South Korea’s wireless broadband technology, WiBro (formerly known as HPi), has been making headlines recently after US operator Sprint and Japan’s KDDI announced they would launch pilot WiBro services in their respective countries by the end of 2005….
…. WiBro uses the 2.3GHz band, with an aim to achieve data transmission at 50Mbps (maximum) with smart antennas in 2006. Indeed, ETRI, Samsung and POS Data are currently upgrading the speed of WiBro from the current 30Mbps to 50Mbps by the end of 2005.…more…
Why WiBro?
‘Cause it’s dirt cheap to implement.
WiBro allows setting up inexpensive services by maximizing the use of the existing infrastructure, by including line lines, base stations, exchange stations and transport networks. The saved investment costs are huge by making the best use of existing telecom infrastructures. Plus it’s MUCH quicker to install because much of the infrastructure is complete.
I wish I had it right now in the hospital rather than the cheap-but-still-expensive PHS wireless Internet (5,000yen/month for only 32Kbps wireless connection).
