Japan’s ‘Female emperor’ bares her Korean heritage

When on stage before the TV cameras, the lanky comedienne with an Osaka-accented foghorn voice frequently towers over her male counterparts, an appearance that has helped her earn the show-business sobriquet “jotei” (female emperor).
Describing popular TV entertainer Akiko “Akko” Wada as a Japanese Carol Burnett would not be far off the mark.
Except for one thing. She’s not Japanese, and never was.

For decades Akiko Wada (和田アã‚å) has held the top spot among female entertainers in Japan. Now that she is getting older (age 55) and her popularity is starting to mature, she’s decided to spice thing up by saying she’s really Korean, an unfavored minority group in Japan.
