A usable cell phone—It’s about fukquing time.

Finally a usable cell phone—It’s about fukquing time.
Japanese cell phones suck. I have thrown away a half dozen in the past four years.
Even though I’ve worked in telecom for 20 years, I still hate ‘em. Why?

  • The buttons are too small and have no tactile feedback.
  • The screens are way too small and not legible in the sunlight.
  • In noise- polluted Japan, it impossible for me to hear any conversation from the earpiece.
  • They’re too fragile and can’t survive here in Tokyo damp tropic heat.
  • However today, KDDI’s “au” service announced a new “A5509T” phone that seems answer my complaints (it will be in the market in Feb, 2006).

A rough translation of the au press release in Japanese Asahi.com says that:

Five ease-of-use functions “A5509T” cell phone of au meet user needs
The new “A5509T” phone features, (1) oversized 2.4 inch QVGA liquid crystal screen, (2) large “dome key” that are easy to press, (3) 20MB memory capacity, (4) strong receiving volume, (5) large and legible screen fonts that makes reading breeze….
…and of course it’s bilingual with an engrish mode.

Also attractive to me is that the phone has:

  • Security mode to lock/encypt the address book, email and photo files on the phone (See “She’s in the loo, I’ll check her phone” …secretly read their partner’s SMS messages”)
  • Restriction modes for more security and cost savings such a “Use restriction” to set a limit of the number of packets and call time
  • “Smart mode” with three deligated buttons to call directly to home, the office or whomever
