Japanese cities bottle tap water — Sales soar

Municipalities’ bottled water sales soar on quality, low prices
IHT/Asahi: …the tasty tap water found in some towns and cities is now being bottled by these municipalities and is proving such a hit …Most of the production costs of 85 yen per bottle go to bottling and other processes….The Yokohama Waterworks Bureau introduced 500-milliliter bottles of Hamakko Doshi water for 100 yen in October 2003. ….
Buying tap water in a bottle may sound silly, but it makes perfect Japanese sense. Japan hates amenities like public water fountains (as well as liter cans, benches, sidewalk trees, underground utilities, and the like). In Japan’s increasingly hot climate, buying water is important.
Hamakko Doshi(tm) (ã¯ã¾ã£åã©ã†ã—) brand of frog water from Doshi woods is hit with “Hammako” (people from Yokohama).
You can visit Hama-pyon (ã¯ã¾ãƒ”ョン) at the YOKOHAMA WATERWORKS BUREAU in engrish or Japanese.
