The “DETONATOR” bike

Of course the inspiration for the “DETONATOR” bike is the cycle from the all-time, animation classic, AKIRA (アキラ) is a 1988 film by Katsuhiro Otomo. You can find more on the inspiration for this scooter here on Wikipedia.org/

AKIRA

Many people have tried to duplicate the rather impossible engineering of the Akira bike. I wrote about a Akira- lookalike EV-X7 scooter before on the 3Yen.

The EV-X7 weighs 200kg and is equipped with a newly-developed high-efficiency motor driving the rear wheel and it is planned to go on sale with the new SUMO in-wheel “SUMO” motor this year.

However, most of these Akira cycle’s are jus mock-ups like the DETONATOR which isn’t really functional even thought it’s still sex-on-wheels. GaijinRider at ridingsun.com even has written about a very lame Akira scooter custom kit.

UPDATE: Gaijin Bikers suggests: “Here’s a better, working replica of the Akira bike.”
