Free Hugs - Any takers in Tokyo?

I was surprised that the video showed any takers in cold Tokyo. Notice that in the video it was the foreigners who joined in first. Japanese can shy about being hugged by anybody (but I enjoy freaking Japanese girls out by kissing them upon introduction, hee, hee). And of course, “free hugs” looks like some kind religious scam.

Who is Hugs and why is in he in jail?
Maybe, just maybe, they would’ve had a better response from the Japanese had their signs been bilingual.

I wonder what would happen if it was otaku guys offering hugs rather than reasonably regular looking Japanese girls?

I don’t think otaku guys could handle the “stress” of offering hugs to Japanese girls, unless they were the smaller type (Thanks for the link).
