Looks fan-rendered but…

Last October on the 3Yen I reported on, Sony to sell Milo. However, now it seems that Sony has already given up and is going to upgrade the PSP to this. Sure a larger screen of the Cobalt is better, but the previous version of the PSP, the Milo, has a hard/real keyboard that zillion times mo’ betta’ than the virtual keys of the Cobalt. Now, I hope for drop in the nasty $350 price for the Milo.

I got the chance to play with a Mylo at the Sony store in Vegas a while back. I was extremely underwhelmed. It seems like such a neat concept, but when you realize that cellphones now do everything the Mylo can– plus they can make calls– it makes the whole gadget seem really pointless.

Nooooooo! Cellphones are “really pointless” ha, ha.

For me, the whole purpose of the Milo is for people in a WiFi covered area like campuses or me in downtown Tokyo to use the Milo for texting, surfing the Net, and for Skype to totally eliminate cellphone bills. Here in Tokyo, the largest Internet provider, YahooBB, leaves their wireless router “open” by default, meaning there’s free WiFi most everywhere.

For the hardcore, even the subways in Tokyo have $12/month WiFi (5Mb/s).

    Dokechi da na!

I am going to try this!

Well Ody, if you are planning on using a Milo+Skype to eliminate ass-raping cellphone bills, you need to consider a couple of things.

    1. To make phone calls to non-Skype regular phones, you’ll need to sign up for the cheap SkypeOut ($0.02/min).

    2. If you don’t also have a landline and an answering machine, you might want to sign up for dirt-cheap Skype voicemail to avoid missing calls when you are out a WiFi area.

Basically, if I was homeless and living in the back of my 1962 Cadillac, all I would need a Milo+SkypeOut and some free/cheap voicemail service—my “cellphone” expenses would be less than $5/month.
