Got Bilk?
DRINK ME. It’s Japanese Milk Beer. Yum.
Ok. The rest of the stroy is that Japan’s aging society means milk consumption tanked. And this beer is from Hokkaido where nearly 900 tons of milk was dumped recently due to over-production.
Anyone for milk beer? Reuters.co.jp, Feb 23, 2006
In Japan there’s been a tie-up between the brewing and dairy industries… in northernmost Hokkaido are hoping to use up spare capacity to create profit from a drink they’re calling “Bilk”….watch the video.…

Actually this is old news. KIRIN beer has been offering “Latte Stout (ラテスタウト)” since 2003 although the “milk” in Latte Stout is just milk sugar (lactose) along with the regular mix of barley malt, wheat malt, and hops. On the other hand, “Bilk” is 30% milk.

OK, that’s just weird. Has anyone tried this beer? How is it?

Yep, it was “weird” but drinkable. Bilk was on sale at my local rare-but-lucky-for-me discount store….Not bad really and I would buy it again on sale. It tasted like milk mead or Russian Kvass.
