Anime mashup holiday
On YouTube I found this remarkably quirky song, “Porque te vas” by somebody called “Jeanette” in a Japanese anime mashup video of “Midori Days” (美鳥の日々, Midori no Hibi).
Midori’s Days is an anime series and manga created by Kazurou Inoue and the title is a pun referring to tomorrow’s holiday Greenery Day (Midori no hi, May 4), which forms of part of “Golden Week“—the holiday period we all are enjoying today.
After a bunch of poking around, I that Jeanette Dimech was sort of a one- two-hit wonder* from the 1960s and this song, “Porque te vas” (Why Are You Leaving), was her claim to fame. The above anime mashup video mirror a stunning scene from Carlos Saura’s 1976 film, Cria Cuervos (Raise Crows, a Cannes Film Festival winner), where Jeanette’s “Porque Te Vas” plays. That original song recorded in 1974 and it has been covered many times without the lo-fi charm of the original. Watch it below.

Enjoy this iPod-ready MP3 (5MB) of the original recording of 1974 song, which I remixed with the hamster sounds and background ambience of the song in Carlos Saura’s film.
And for comparison, here’s a 1:13 minute clip (MP3, 940KB) the original soundtrack of the movie, which has a quite a bit of Spanish at the end.

I said “SORT-OF a one-hit wonder” because I really could not figure out whether the other songs she had done were bona fide hits or not. Thanks for the confirmation,

Both of you don’t know anything of Jeanette because you were too young to know about her. Jeanette was a beloved singer of Spain, born in London and raised in California. All of her songs made hundred of people in South America and Europe feel themselves

She’s definitely, DEFINITELY more than a one-hit-wonder. I love her songs. You really should do more searching, etc. She still holds concerts today. The reason you probably don’t know much about her is because she sings in Spanish and last time I checked, most of the teenage population is not only in the wrong generation for her style to be popular among us, but they’re mostly into rap etc. Because of that, she’s less known in America than she would be in Spanish-speaking countries. :D
