The Man-in-the-Moon may be fun, but in Japan it is the Rabbit-in-the-Moon. That is, the Japanese envision a rabbit pounding mochi/rice cakes.
As you can see on the right, the Japanese even find Buddha in the Bunny, the Gako Bosatsu–Bodhisattva of Moonlight (月光菩薩) part of the Yakushi-sanzon/Triad of Healing.
