Japanese SPACE BEER!

The Nikkei reports that the Japan’s Sapporo brewery is going to brew a “space beer” in November. The photo shows Okayama University professor, Manabu Sugimoto (R), and his grad student Elena Shagenardanova (L) of Russia with a sheaf of “space barley” from the first generation of barley that was germinated on the Russian space lab.

   OKAYAMA (Kyodo) An Okayama elementary school launched a project Wednesday to research the effects of space travel on the growth of silkworms. Russian students are also taking part in the science project.
   Students in the fifth grade at Higashiune Elementary School began raising ordinary silkworms Wednesday. Their growth rate will be compared with that of offspring from silkworms that orbited Earth for 12 days last month as larvae, said Manabu Sugimoto, an associate professor of Okayama University helping to run the project.

   ….”We want to finish the beer by November. It will be the first space beer,” Sapporo executive Junichi Ichikawa told reporters.
   The company will have enough space grain to produce about 100 bottles of beer but has no immediate plan to make it a commercial venture, Sapporo officials said.

   They have made it and it is available in limited about 1500 bottles at a price of 110 a six pack.
