When/if I leave my apartment (my second) I know I'm going to forfeit the 100,000+ deposit no matter what, so I do anything I want to the wallpapered walls. After 10 years in this place, there must be hundreds of holes, not to mention the other "customizing" I've done. When you move out, they're going to "reform" the place, right? They'll ripoff the wallpaper and fill-in large holes. Thumbtack holes just get covered with the new wallpaper. But you know, Japanese have a weird view about "damaging" their home interiors. A Japanese friend _owns_ a home. But they use those stupid spring-loaded shelves that fit between walls. I asked why. Well, they didn't want to put holes in the walls. Yes, but, it's _your_ home. You can do anything you want. That's the point. You can install real shelves. Sigh. Don't get ME started.

but in uninsulated concrete Japanese housing using wallpaper is criminal fraud (bordering on oppression of the people).>>>>>>

It is, it is- are you are very right- I remember in the early days wiping down the inside of the window- Lived in one flat where we were not allowed to use gas heaters (because of the condensation build up.) I remember when we were searching to purchase one- they emphasized in their pamphlets showing triple panes, etc but we have vents everywhere, but I like the most in some years ago it was mandatory to have a fire sprinkler system and fire alarm.. I HATE and defy wallpaper!--Hate it-- they made a mistake in ours and applied wallpaper to the bottom for flair..so I am debating to paint over or??? But still worried even with the insulation-- the seems may pop... Reduce consumption by 20%, I can see the Japanese buying this up quickly- don't we/they aim to be eco friendly in all areas? You know what, having been here for only four months- new dishwasher.. I just found mold on the inside and near the fridge seems?? Why is that.. this place is to be insulated, at least that's what we thought we are paying for.. ERR... I had a bad week..

Remind me old flat I was renting... 80% humidity minimum all year round, black mold everywhere, water dripping from the wall in winter. Total nightmare.

Much better now... mah appartement... in mah building... can be up to a week without hearing from the cat... 20% humidity in winter... I have to empty bucket of water in the computer server room to avoid meltdown... But if I dont like something... sledgehammer, elbow grease are just what I need to remove a wall, put a new door, make an helipad on the roof or turn the parking into a flower garden. No more noisy neighbours... And the orgasmic pleasure when somebody enter the parking to be a 'dirty gaijin' but to ask those japanese intruders to GFO of mahh (family) property...

As for insulation... how funny to see that the lecturing japanese who claim to respect and protect the planet being 40 years late compare to europe... And don't mention central heating... it's alien technology from outerspace for them....

Don't just me started.
In its current state, Japanese construction/architecture is the Perfect Storm of bad practices.
Back in the old days, paper walls were fine, but in uninsulated concrete Japanese housing using wallpaper is criminal fraud (bordering on oppression of the people). In terms of wall treatment, Japanese builders force wallpapers on people because it's so much easier than drywall or plaster. Of course, in the uninsulated concrete cage-condos the Japanese live in, wallpaper cannot last more than a few years before the seams pop (because the Japanese haven't invented vapor barriers for their walls either). A simple but strict change in Japanese building code requiring vapor barriers and serious insulation would reduced Japanese energy consumption 15% (that's more than eight new nuke power plants). Sheesh.
Like I said, don't get me started.

Saaaa, it's not so funny trying to fix Japanese wallpaper when moving out an apartment. I had to pay 120,000yen in damage deposit just because I used regular pushpins for a calendar and a few photos on one wall in my kitchen hallway. ;-(

YES! It looks to be a very slick design that would work better with the ubiquitous Japanese wallpaper with the funky-fragile soft padding that damages so easily.
