Japan’s Mt Tashmore denied World Heritage status

Mount Fuji nomination as World Heritage site put off until 2012
2009jan24 – The Mainichi Daily News
FUJIYOSHIDA, Yamanashi — Plans to submit Mount Fuji to the World Heritage list in 2011 are likely to be postponed for more than a year, Yamanashi prefectural officials said.
The shrine and caves on the mountain aren’t enough to qualify it for World Heritage status…more…
Now for the rest of the story…
Mount Fuji, aka Fuji-san, is a stinking mountain of raw sewage and trash. For decades, Japan has applied for World Heritage status for Mount Fuji…thankfully without success. A few years ago Japan got close to approval, but then had to beg to withdraw its application to make Mount Fuji a UNESCO World Heritage site because [Oh the horror!] they would have to clean up the mountain.
If you must do must do Mount Fuji (as I have three times) read my 3Yen guide to climbing it: Mount Fuji — Just say no. Basically, my suggestion is to climb (semi-illegally) in the off-season rather that smell the shit of tens of thousands of climbers who came before you like this photo.
