Bluefin tuna — Black market: ‘Everybody cheats’

Study: Tuna black market worth billions of dollars
AFP | 2010 Nov. 7 — The craze for sushi has fueled a black market in tuna worth billions of dollars, as governments collaborate with the industry despite fears for the species' survival….A seven-month probe by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists found that fishermen have willfully violated official quotas in order to supply the lucrative tuna market, which is dominated by Japan.
The investigation covered 10 nations but found particular violations in France, where it said the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries has joined forces with the tuna industry to doctor catch numbers.
“Everyone cheated,” said Roger Del Ponte, one of the six French fishing captains facing criminal charges. “It's like driving down the road. If I know there are no police, I'm going to speed” …more…

   I am glad you noticed the screen grab of the music video “Fish Heads,” by Barnes & Barnes (1976), which was named as one of the top 100 videos of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.

   The bluefin tuna has been part of controversy for years. I wrote my environmental law thesis late last year on methods to protect the bluefin from extinction but the situation is terribly bleak. 80% of global supply is being consumed in Japan as they prize the tender, fatty meat for sushi dishes.
   According to the WWF, the Atlantic bluefin tuna will be wiped out by 2012 if fishing is not halted.
