Japan’s radioactive ‘idol’ group, the ‘Hot☆Spots’, bomb

Plans for a new idol group, “Hot☆Spots,” have been called off and the auditions have been cancelled for young women living in the radioactive Chiba Prefecture east of Tokyo and downwind from the Fukushima nuclear meltdown according to reports in the Japanese press (Asahi).

The prefectural government of Chiba had posted ads (see right) looking for, “young women aged 10 to 22 proficient in song and dance…who want to up the image [sic.] of the hot spot radioactivity area(see the hot spots on the map shown on the bottom right) .

Sadly, the Hot☆Spots Production Committee leaked these plans Twitter on January 17th causing an uproar and many complaints of Chiba property owners. For some reason, glow-in-the-dark folks in Chiba did not want to be thought of as being “radioactive.” The cancelation was a shame since the Hot☆Spots auditions—planned to be held on February 28 and 29—already had a good response with many applications (in part do to the huge rise in unemployment caused by the nuclear meltdowns).
