I have lived there for quite awhile and if you are planinng on getting a the old style tat from a native you have no choice but with a hand-pounded Nara ink that famously turns blue-green under the skin. The artist secretly meets with you and get to know you for a little while and then they design it based off of your personality. But if you want a commercial design any of them are fine, meh. This traditional irezumi is still done but it is painful, time-consuming and expensive: a typical traditional body suit (covering the arms, back, upper legs and chest, but leaving an untattooed space down the center of the body) can take one to five years of weekly visits to complete and can cost $30,000 or more.
