According the of the St. Gallen Brewery website (giga-goofy Google Translate) “Black Ivory” coffee used to make the elephant poop beer is produced by feeding rescued elephants their regular feed mixed with the berries of Arabica coffee, which slowly pass through the elephants over a period of 15 to 30 hours. The indigestible coffee berries are finally discharged as elephant dung, which is then washed and the berries are sifted out. The reclaimed coffee is dried in the sun, the coffee beans are separated out and roasted to make, 
the world’s finest elephant dung ‘Black Ivory’ used make St. Gallen’ Black Beer.

Can’t be as bad as Heartland.
I had to check the Kirin’s Heartland was even legally beer Amazingly, it is! I would have guessed that Fartland was one of those weird Japanese “3rd-Category beverage” happoshu (発泡酒), a low-malt beer-like beverage” (carbonated water, chemical faux-beer favoring, grain alcohol).
Heartland’s aroma is all skunk and I can’t really pick up much else. Well, maybe some slight fishy smell. Too sweet malty-yeasty flavor without a trace of hops. Yuck.
