Japan enters the era of smartphones and ‘dumbwalking’
BBC | July 14, 2014
More than half of all Japanese now own a smartphone and the proportion is rising fast.
But with that rise has grown another phenomenon – the smartphone walk.
It’s that glacial pace people only adopt when they’re staring at a phone screen – their head down, arms outstretched, looking like zombies trying to find human prey
entering the ‘dumbwalking’ era: Will it change Japanese phone etiquette, notably the best in the world?

  1. Japanese people not paying attention to their surroundings when they walk down the street? Say it ain’t so!!!

  2. Oh yeah, this has only been happening recently as “Japan has been a late adopter when it comes to smartphones.” No one ever used to walk around looking at their ‘phones before.

I think the writer must just be a newb to Japan as the Japanese clearly invented dumbwalking well before the first iPhone ever appeared…

  4. Yep…just watch any doramas from the ’80’s and you can watch them walk through traffic, actually talking to each other, instead of texting, but the results were the same….tying up everything and everybody around them into the miasma of traffic congestion…and when you add umbrellas into the mix on rainy days…..

  5. Japan’s smartphone ‘zombies’ turn urban areas into human pinball

    The Japan Times | 2014/11/17
When the lights change at the scramble crossing near Tokyo’s Shibuya Station, one of the world’s busiest crosswalks, hundreds of people with their eyes glued to smartphone screens pick their way through the throng.
Despite being engrossed in their phones, playing the latest installment of Candy Crush or chatting with their friends on the Line messaging app, most manage to weave around cyclists, skateboarders and their fellow Tokyoites.
But the growing ranks of these cellphone addicts are turning cities like Tokyo, London, New York and Hong Kong into increasingly hazardous hot spots where zombified shoppers appear to be part of a vast game of human pinball.
“Hey, watch it!” barked a middle-aged salaryman as a hipster typing on his smartphone slammed into him during one recent Friday evening rush hour.
