A fair shake … Japan style

akb48 handshake event

Late last May, two members of the megapopular idol group “AKB48″ had to be hospitalized after they were attacked by a crazed fan wielding with a saw during the group’s meet ’n’ greet. Since then there has been much angst about how to safely hold akushukai / “handshaking” events.

Many ideas have been suggested (3Yen / 2014-05-26 ), but the following was the most “Japanese” solution.

handshake-robot

Translation: This new video conference system that can shake hands was created by a research group of the University of Osaka. The system allows you to remotely shake hands with a distant person by tele-connecting them using a robot pseudo-hand during an online conversation.

Thank God they have solved that pressing problem of not being able to shake hands over a videoconference! I really don’t know how we have managed until now. This must rank with the taming of fire as one of the top human achievements!
Please excuse the non-deliberate pun. No need to excuse the bile. Even if it is only a demonstration that they have mastered sensing the pressure exerted by the human and reproduced it in the robot arm, give it something a bit more purposeful to demonstrate like picking up a fragile foodstuff, breaking an egg, something like that.

  2. Unfortunately, the Japanese have long ago decided that the appropriate way to greet each other is by bowing, not by handshaking. So, it’s not like this will find much application inside Japan.

That said, with the recent developments regarding Ebola, I foresee a huge world market…

  3. Don’t they already have interactive porn devices like this? Seems like a better business plan than a device that allows you to simply shake hands.

If it can shake hands, it can jerk you off.

  5. AKB48 member, Oya Shizuka, is making fun of her lack of any fans waiting to get her handshake at today’s AKB48 Handshake Event.

(Details about her unpopularity at Kotaku.com.)
